Tour Location
The Jungle Tour & Snorkel experience takes place in Cancun's Nichupté Lagoon and at Punta Nizuc Reef, home to the famous Underwater Museum of Art.
The jungle portion of the tour navigates through the dense mangrove forests that line the lagoon. These mangroves are crucial to the local ecosystem, serving as nurseries for many marine species and protecting the coastline from erosion. The narrow channels wind through the trees, creating a maze-like environment that's both mysterious and beautiful.
After emerging from the mangrove channels, the tour heads to Punta Nizuc, located at the southern tip of Cancun's Hotel Zone. Punta Nizuc is part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, the second-largest coral reef in the world. The reef here is relatively shallow, making it ideal for snorkeling.
The waters around Punta Nizuc are known for their exceptional clarity, with visibility often extending 30 feet or more. The reef itself is home to a diverse array of marine life, including colorful tropical fish, sea turtles, rays, and various species of coral.
What makes this location truly unique is the presence of the Underwater Museum of Art (MUSA). This innovative project features over 500 permanent life-sized sculptures placed on the ocean floor. The sculptures are made from specialized materials that promote coral growth, effectively creating an artificial reef. The museum is divided into several galleries, with the Punta Nizuc gallery being accessible to snorkelers.
The underwater terrain varies from sandy bottoms to coral formations, with the sculptures interspersed throughout. This creates a surreal landscape where art and nature blend seamlessly, offering a one-of-a-kind snorkeling experience.
